TrackMom Diaries High School Hunting …..Scarier Than Halloween at Knotts Scary Farm

Looking for a suitable High School..Scarier than this clown

Knotts “Scarey” Farm is a local Amusement park just 15-20 minutes  from our home and a very popular attraction during the early fall heading toward Halloween. It’s a big deal and all the kids for almost 40 years years  have made it a destination to go to during this season. I have never been  in my youth or after because I can’t stand scarey, evil looking dead people and  things jumping out at me and catching me off guard.

This is my journey to finding “The High School Lauren Williams will attend 2014-2017″  SCAREY…..SCAREY

The reason I am writing about  high school hunting being “Scarier Than Halloween is because for the past few weeks  Henry and I have been visiting schools. High Schools, for Lauren to potentially attend next fall. Our choice has to be  made sometime in the late December time frame.

I thought I knew what I wanted, what he wanted and where I wanted,  but now that our choices have been laid out,it isn’t so cut and dry. I am excited by some of the very competitive sports schools, and competitive academic schools  and at the same time disappointed  with the knowledge base and approach to sprinting for the elite level athlete some( ok most) of these coaches bring to the table, egos at almost all of the visited schools are ridiculous and down right unbelievable.

They act like they are doing us a favor for taking Lauren off our hands training wise…

So Sorry Coach _________,and Coach_________ I am a parent first, track parent second and while you think this track mom doesn’t know track and field as good as you , you just might be mistaken  and for sure you are mistaken if you think by watching my Lauren a couple of times over the past 5 years you know our athlete better, you are sadly, sadly over estimating your understanding of what is at stake for both You and Lauren. And just what it has taken  to get her here.

So stop saying things like and I quote…”Girls love uniforms I just want to keep them happy” What the heck  UNIFORMS REALLY???  You have got to be kidding me . Happy is performing  well not a fashion show. What do uniforms have to do with training cycles and understanding what makes my athlete tick…Unbelievable. I would rather go to Knotts’ this weekend that face another arrogant unattached  coach one more time ,but that is just what we will be doing again next week and a few more weeks until we get through this list of “potentials”.

With that said I have been pleasantly surprised with  the openness of one school I had previously said  Lauren would never go to. At this point Henry and I are daily talking about new thoughts we have come to, about stupid comments we have heard..LOL

Oh Well, Lauren has to go to school some where I surely am not interested( I Don’t Think these coaches may drive me to reconsider)  home schooling.

So Halloween approaches and I  am getting more scared by the school visit…. I might just visit Knott’s sooner than later to get a dose of courage to continue on.

Wish  us  luck!

I am currently a freshman in Colorado that runs for USATF. I placed 1st in the 100 meter hurldes this year. Last year we had to make the same big decision. With the high schools, it turned out being easier than we thought. at the end of the day education is key. So we went with a bigger high school with a better education program. Luckily, the coach their coachs big ego was squashed when she learned what i had done 2012 season. For whatever decision you guys make for high school, Lauren should be fine. The HS coaches should eventually understand she is running to improve her preformance, not to carry their team. At that point, their egos should die down :) . Best of luck to you guys! Look forward to seeing Lauren tear up the track again 2013 season.

  5. Illinois Experience says:

I am going to say, “DO NOT listen to what any high school coach says they can and will do for your child”. Even if they say, they will work with you. In the end, they are the high school coach and no matter what, your athlete will have to do what they say in practice even if they find it to be outrageous. Its to much of a risk. Those who have been in the club track game along time may know an athlete named Alexis Hyshaw out of Illinois. Yes, she was one of the top athletes in the country until she hit high school. Sometimes, we assume just because parents have had a meeting with the coaches, things will be ok. But in the end, the athlete is still training under their rules and regulations and there’s nothing the parent can do. I’ve heard this athletes school even came up with a rule which stated if an athlete missed 3 practices that were not approved by the coaches, they would be off the high school team. I believe this was done to prevent her from training with her club coaches back then. Well, she ended up being injured and missing the majority of her freshman year and sophomore year. She is gradually making her way back. 2 years have past and her parents finally made the right decision by transfering her to a new school for 2013 season and putting her in a program that also has a club track program mentality when it comes to training and club coaches involved. I think if they would have done this before high school she would still be on top of her game. Listening and giving those inexperienced coaches a chance to train athletes that are nationally ranked is not something I would tell anyone to do, take this athletes bad experience as a learning lesson and dont put your child or any athlete in that same situation if you can prevent it.
