46th Annual Phoenix Invitational Travel Day Friday

We got a slower than usual start this morning but finally about 6:30 am we were on the road. This year we have an additional passenger Shante Robinson.Lauren’s trusty track buddy and the 3rd leg of the Midget Girl 4x100m relay. It’s nice for Lauren to have a buddy to travel with and she really is enjoying her company.

Most of the way to Arizona the girls slept,Henry drove and I slept about 1.5 hours out of the 5 hour trip. Our family always enjoys this trip so much because we get a brief spring get away and we really enjoy the drive. About Palm Springs area 8:00am, we took a quick break and got our traditional road breakfast out of the back; Greek Yogurt, granola, fruit nuts and water.Just enough to hold us over until we get to Phoenix.

The weather is warm and a little humid with a sight bit of over cast clouds above. when I wasn’t talking to Henry or sleeping Ii was reading some  new literature on Hamstring Injuries.Lately I have had  a few patients presenting with this injury which is horrible for all athletes especially Track athletes. Being in a car really helps me focus since there wasn’t any place I had to be.To my surprise I didn’t only get through the hamstring but core strength,Quads and groin injuries too.Wish I could do this more often. Memo to self “Pick up the doctor books more than once or twice a week from now on”…Okay I’ll try.

Once we got to Phoenix we got a little turned around (like always) then we arrived at the track to put up the team tents. With almost no space left we squeezed the second to last space at the top . Wow,these people must have started putting up the tents late Thursday evening. In the past when we arrived there at 11 or 12 we were the first people there.

As we put the tents up we saw friendly faces from So Cal looking for their special place to set up camp too. This tent topic brings me to  a couple of basic points of track etiquette 101.

When you are looking for a space to call your own please don’t move  another’s tent to make room for yours.Yes there was a man there that reported his tent was moved and he was very upset about the turn of events for his tent. Ouch

Another track 101 etiquette point,If you see some one that needs help with putting up or taking down, by all means help him or her. Multiple hands make the load much lighter.

After the track we headed for the hotel when I asked my husband to stop at a store “really quick so I could pick up something I forgot at home..Yep my hat was left right on the bed…LOL never can remember everything. The hat turned into 3 pair of sandals a pair of tennis shoes for Lauren and a clipper set for Henry. Shopping always is more fun out of town isn’t It?

Finally around 2 :30pm we arrived at the hotel Spring Hill Suites. Lauren approved and set out in fast order to get the lay of the land , me, I just laid on the bed ready to sleep a while.   While I laid on the bed the girls and Henry grabed some food out of our ice chest to eat and then they went to the Costco to get some food  for tomorrow’s lunch. This year one of my 3 sisters and her family are also here with us.Well not here yet but on their way. Her daughter Miah is a lower youth girl this year and very excited about running in her first relay  the 4×800.

So our goal tonight is to get to bed early… well it’s a good goal time will tell. They are out to get dinner right now.I am waiting for an athlete to come by for a quick adjustment then I will hopefully get my head start on my side of the bed…I am just tired today….hope my energy is back tomorrow. I am sure it will be.Don’t for get to say hi if you see me tomorrow and Sunday. I will be around taking pictures and watching some great semi races and some finals too!

Until then…… Lauren’s first race 200m.

 Good Night.
