A Soaked So Cal Weekend. Yes It Does Rain In Southern California
They say that you have to get the first race of the season , of a big meet, of the the year out of the way to calm the nerves and settle into what you have to do….Don’t think this meet qualified. No fault of our host Imani Track Club,Compton California the weather was just horrible. I can’t really understand WHY we were even subjecting ourselves to the rain. It was more than simple rain, it was down right torrential and yes I as many many other were sitting in it until almost 5-6 hours Saturday afternoon. Yes, our better judgement came into question many times. No answers, just blank looks of wonder.
The rain stopped from time to time and lucky for Lauren the sun peaked out on both of her races 100m and the 400m.Many weren’t as lucky running wet and often times against a good strong gust…
The weather was so distracting I really didn’t get to take pictures or even walk to the other side of the stadium,to cold to windy at times and to wet most of the time. So there you have it a wet “yuky” start to the track season in So Cal.
I felt really bad for the new parents to track and field because they were just puzzled and dismayed saying things like “Is this youth track?” Well yes and no the heat is coming and the humidity and the longer than need be meets so buckle up. Looks like more of the same this weekend…..I am praying for sunshine we will see what happens.
I’m looking for the Rainbow….

I, like so many others, think that inclement weather is the sole province of the northeast and the Mid-west. When I hear about rain in So Cal I’m taken back a little. I remember thinking when I go to nationals that ‘all those prima-donnas from Cali can’t handle the bad weather’. in Philly. That’s the east coast edge. Then Track Mom brings me back to reality. It rains everywhere and we don’t have any control over it. God controls the weather and the meet organizers control the meet. So athletes, parents, spectators and coaches ‘suck it up’ get used to it. It rains everywhere and we still run in it.
I agree but sometimes it’s ok to swallow ones pride and walk away to run another day.
In our case Henry being the assistant coach we had to be there, but he wanted to go for the team and for Lauren. Me not so much…..There were a few that left and more that stayed..I think both choices were okay. Yes,Coach Jackson rain isn’t on it’s own merit a reason not to hold a track meet.
More to come this week so the weather man says. I buying a new umbrella this week.
