Talent Rising
The development and nurturing of athletic talent is a process. A long term process. I believe that development to reach the highest levels of his or her ability should be based on a well designed, well thought out strategy that incorportates the childs natural, age driven development cycle of growth and physical development. A well-designed frequently reviewed plan that allows for long-term improvements. Scientific research has concluded that it takes a minimum of 10 years and 10,000 hours of training for a talented athlete to reach elite levels (Ericsson & Charness 1994; Salmela et al. 1998).
This translates into more than 3 hours of training daily for 10 years (a commitment that few can or will make). In sports circles, this is referred to as the “10-year rule,” and in the preparation of Olympic athletes it is supported by both the U.S. Olympic Committee (2002) and Canadian Sport Centres (2006).
Over the past decade, the sports conditioning field has seen considerable growth in science and practical training alike. Todays progressive coach is focusing more on injury prevention, overuse syndrome and overall development. Example , to improve sprinting ability, track coaches are focusing on leg strength, power and speed through multijoint lifts and plyometrics. Along with this trend came the use of strength and conditioning coaches who devoted their role to improving each athlete’s unique physicality.
Athletes and coaches and parents are always looking for way in enhance the athletes abilty to rise to his or her best performances. These tools are tangible and intangible all in an effort to help them achieve this edge.
The focus of sports conditioning goes beyond training,it should eliciting peak athletic performance from a smarter, more skilled body. This can be reflected in a well thoughout sports conditioning workout curriculum and long-term plan.
Winning each “small” challenge of training and practice along the way is what can add up to a final big win.
What ever the plan, a plan is essential. If you don’t know where you are going any road to no where or somewhere not planned will get you “THERE”.
