The Rockford Fire Track Team is  set to do their best as they prepare for the August 2nd-August 8th to Competiton in Des Moines, Iowa for the 2009 AAU National Junior Olympic Games.

Track Mom Midwest Monique Jones shared that this year the Jones family has taken on the challenge of introducing youth track and field to the Rockford Area Park District.

The program is called the Rockford FIRE and it is a new concept for the district.  This your 50% of the qualifiers (nine total) are new to the sport of youth track and field,  it is so rewarding for us to see the enthusiam of the children and especially of my youngest to be among those that a have “MADE IT”,  that was the words echoed throughout the meet after each event, “I MADE IT!”  Well, yes, they made it and we are happy to accompany 5 families to the AAU National JO Games this year.

What I really like about this team is that it is a combination Recreational and Club team which allows all children a chance to participate and learn the sport and set goals ,attainable goals at every level for themseleves.

The youngest and most enthusiastic team member Phairra Jones is ready to jump her way to a possible medal. Phairra loves long jumping, In fact she jumped 8′-06″ in the primary girls long jump. and is excited to follow in the foot steps of her big sister Patrice. F.I.R.E coach Duwayne Jones, whose other daughter , Patrice placed fifth at  the National AAU Junior Olympic Games in the Midget Girls 400-meters last year.  said recently, “Some of these kids don’t have the experience on the national level, but they will be able to use the experience to get better and have fun.”

I just love it! It says everything we need to remember about youth track and field. It should be fun for the kids, but it should give them something to aspire to as well. Thanks for recognizing our kids here in the Midwest.
