Could You Use A “Flying Lesson”?
April 22, 2009
Waiting for Lauren in my car while she was taking piano lessons yesterday, I spent the time reading again one of my favoritie books ”Flying Lessons” by Gregg Steinberg,Ph.D
He has so many great learning tools and antidotes to help our kids reach their highest potential. This book is a must have and I bought mine through Amazon for a real cheap price . Any way in the back of the book there is a brief story about one of my all time favortie Olympic Athletes Billy Mills Gold and his medal run in 1964.
American Billy Mills blazed past Mohammed Gahmoudi and Ron Clarke in the last 20 meter.Mills appeared to be too far back to be in contention to win the 10K race at Tokoyo ‘64 But against all odds he ran a personal best by 50 seconds and the Gold. The sounds of the announcer screaming are priceless (you gotta see this),
Mills is reported as saying that he knew he couldn’t win but bronze wasn’t to bad at the Olympic Games then something kicked in and he began saying I can win, I can win and an amazing burst of energy came over him helpinghim to win gold.
I let Lauren read the brief paragraph when she finished the lessons and she to my amazement had a lot to say about the story . It wasa great way to open the conversation up about winning and doing what you know is your best. The take home for you is that competition is a journey that has many twist and turns but all the experiences can lead to grow in the sport and life of the athlete that can embrace this journey.
Share a story sometime to open up the conversation about doing your best even when it’s seems a little tough.
