Competeting Without Mom
March 2, 2009
This past weekend Lauren practiced with dad and the team on Saturday because there wasn’t a meet scheduled ,and I took a much needed day off with my friends catching up before I started my “Annual Track Meet A-Thon” for the better part of the next 5 months.
While I was with my friends we talked about everything from soup to nuts, but mostly about the little people we gladly had got away from for the day. Our kids. All of the kids being of different age groups we had a lot to gleen from each other. Some of the stories were good ,some not so good but all were insightful.
As I shared some of my “Trackmom” routines with them, it dawned on me just how much we as parents do to help provide the best envirionment for their track training and competetions. You know the drill :
We get them up early for the meets
Wash their clothes and make sure they have all the needed equipment and shoes etc.
Make their breakfast, shakes, toast what every they want often times
I could go on but the conclusion I came to was that I really have to right now get the 4th grader more involved with the how and why of her food before training and meets so that when it is time for to go to highschool and college she will know how to prepare these lovely shakes and recovery meals and regular meal too for herself and maybe even a couple of clueless friends as time goes on.
As much as I want to never miss a meet, I will. As much as I want to make every power shake with love and caring I won’t be able to. As much as I want her to stay with mom for every she can’t and won’t want to so. I guess there is no time like the present to begin introducing along with all the other life training topics we already have in the training bag of life, now this topic will be admitted too.
How to be the best, most prepared athlete on the track and off.
Knowing how to take good care of the body God gave you to run with. The same way your mom has all these years. with so much to teach and so little time as it flys like the wind I think this week we will work on shake preparation… She will do all the work I will just direct.
Wish me Luck and guidance : - )
