Good Care Goes Along Way

March 27, 2009

My friend Dr. Bill Booker of Capitol Rehab in The D.C Area shared this article with me on Thursday and I just could help but share it with you ,even though these athletes aren’t youth age. They have great consistant care that is helping them stay at the top of their. Anyone in the D.C. area that needs some injury  prevention or injury care   You can’t go wrong with Dr .Bill he treats youth athletes as well.

You might find yourself getting tired of us bragging about our elite athletes, but I’m sorry, they are that good. And the past few weeks have been nothing less than spectacular!

At the USA Cross Country Championships, Julie Culley (white and black) and Samia Akbar (blue and gold of reebok) finished 2nd and 6th respectively to qualify for the World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan, later this spring.

In 2008, Julie placed 7th at the Olympic Trials in the 5000 with a personal best of 15:34.43 and finished 3rd at the USA Indoor Championships. Her third place finish earned her a spot on the 2008 World Indoor Team, that competed in Valencia Spain, where Julie was a semi-finalist. Julie was a decorated athlete while attending Rutgers University, where she still holds school records in the 3000, 5000 and Distance Medley. Currently she trains with Coach Matt Centrowitz.

Samia’s performance in these National Championships was a nice return after a quiet 2008. In 2006, Samia was 3rd in the 10,000 at the USA Track and Feld Championships. She followed that performance with a personal best 1:13:12 half marathon in Philadelphia, only to top that by debuting at the NY City Marathon finishing in a very impressive 2:34:14. Samia is a graduate of American Universty and currently trains in Northern Virginia with Coach Scott Raczko.

But while very few people were watching, Lindsey Gallo ran the Fastest Mile in the World this year by a woman when she crossed the line at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games in 4:27.90.

Although it is still very early in the season, it goes without saying that Lindsey has very big plans as we head towards the World Championships later this summer.

More Woes For High Fructose Corn Syrup

March 24, 2009

Why High-Fructose Corn Syrup Causes Insulin Resistance

high fructose corn syrup, corn, corn syrup, fructose, diabetes, heart disease, HFCS, insulin, leptin, insulin resistanceA new study in mice sheds light on at least part of the reason for the insulin resistance that can come from diets high in high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener found in most sodas and many other processed foods.

Fructose is much more readily metabolized to fat in the liver than glucose, and in the process can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. NAFLD in turn leads to hepatic insulin resistance and type II diabetes.

Researchers showed that mice fed a high-fructose diet could be protected from insulin resistance if a gene known as transcriptional coactivator PPARg coactivator-1b (PGC-1b) was “knocked down” in the animals’ liver and fat tissue. PGC-1b controls the activity of several other genes, including one responsible for building fat in the liver. This suggests an important role for PGC-1b in the pathogenesis of fructose-induced insulin resistance.
