Stabilizing Ankle Exercises

Ankle injuries can short circuit an athletes season and cause repetitive nagging  pain if not resolved properly.  Runners most commonly sprain ankles by stepping in a hole or tripping on a tree root or rock while training.

According to Runner’s World,”People who supinate, or tend to strike the ground with the outside edges of their feet, are prone to ankle sprains. A natural amount of supination occurs during the push-off phase of the running cycle as the heel lifts off the ground and the forefoot and toes assist in propelling the body forward. Excessive supination, however, strains the muscles and the tendons that stabilize the ankle, which can result in a partial or complete tear of the ankle ligaments on the outside of the foot. Often runners roll their ankles and recover instantly, continuing on their run without a problem”.

To help stabilize and strengthen the ankle joint there are many simple to do exercise one can do to prevent injury .  One of my favorite ankle exercises are the Ankle Stabilizing Exercises they are easy and very helpful, and I use these regularly with my athletes. The Ankle Strengthen , an another exercise that can be done to help strengthen the ankle joint.

If your athlete rolls over or somehow twists his ankle first thing is to remove weight, get off of feet  and begin to ice. See the article R.I.C.E  for more information on tending to an injury.
