For Makiah Green Track and Field Is Just The Beginning

November 30, 2008

Makiah Green is the youngest child of Kent and Valarie Green of Clinton Maryland. She is a member of the Speed Tech Track Club .She attends Stephen Decatur Middle School. The outgoing 13 year old’s favorite subject is Science. She enjoys reading, listening to music, and going to parties to eat the food.  This young dynamo shines on the track and in the classroom.

In 2001 while residing in military housing on Andrews Air Force Base the Green family lived on a Cul-De-Sac that had a circular island in the center. One day when Makiah was six years old her father looked out the front door and saw her racing a friend around the island.

He said, “Makiah was winning even though her friend was riding a bike.  I watched them go around that circle about five or six times. The girl just couldn’t catch her.  When I saw that I knew she had the potential to be a good runner.”

Unwilling to risk burn out by pushing her too soon her parents waited until 2005 to sign her up for organized age group track. Just two years later, her Midget Girls 4×200 (1:55.14) and 4×400 (4:24.43) relay teams took first place at the Nike Indoor National Track Championships.  She closed out the 2007 season by running the lead leg for the Bronze medal winning Midget Girls 4X100 relay (52.39) at the AAU Junior Olympics in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In 2008 the speedster showed great range by qualifying to compete in the Sub-Youth girl’s 100 meter dash (13.46/55th) and the Youth girls 4×100 (52.12/41st), 4×400 (4:15.42/27th), & 4×800 (11:17.21/20th) meter relays at the AAU Junior Olympics held in Detroit Michigan. Although she didn’t bring home any hardware from Detroit, the experience increased her determination to get to the medal stand in 2009.

That determination also shows in the classroom.  Her mother said, “She strives to do her best no matter what. She understands the importance of a good education and works hard to get the most out of all her classes”. That hard work paid off when Makiah, who also plays on the girl’s basketball team, recently achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA and was one of just two students presented with the “Principal’s Award” for Academic Achievment.

Many athletes take awhile to find a balance between the demands of the classroom and the pursuit of their athletic endeavors. Others seem to quickly find their stride in both arenas. Makiah falls into the “others” category. Her positive attitude, magnetic personality, and natural talent combine to make her one of Maryland’s brightest rising stars.

Way to go Makiah!!! Congratultions

I would like to thank the Green Family for sharing this inspiring story.

Until Next Time

Hi, am makiah’s best friend shawn, and you are absolutely right about everything about her. She is one best people I’ve met in a long time, she told me she ran track but I didnt know she was on the internet. We are basically the 2 smartest in our class, but she is still funny, caring, and a really good friend.

Got something to say?
