Paralympics Bejing 2008

The Paralympics
The Paralympic Games have taken place in the same venues after the Olympics finshes. This arrangement has been in place since  2000 Sydney Games . This event is known not only as an elite sporting event but a movement the world over that showcases and brings awareness to “abled” athletes with an impairement that has not disabled them. A large group of athletes that include wheelchair, amputee, visually impaired ,and  those with cerebral palsy. When I think about inspiration and courage ,the Paralympics stand out as a great testament to both.
Exposure of the Parlympics is due in large part to the sprinter from South Africa  ”Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius who came up just a little short of  qualifying  to represent his team  this year in the 2008 Beijing Olympics .  There is more attention and awareness today for the Paralympics than every, perhaps in 2012 there will be more  reported about these special, amazing athletes so that we can be inspired by them just as we were by the athletes of the Olympics. The games officially started on September 6th and will continue until the 17th of this month.

The guys at “The Science of Sport  had this to say yesterday about the Paralympics:

“The Paralympics continues into next week, and should throw up some incredible inspirational stories. Do yourself a favour and watch, and you’ll be amazed at how some athletes overcome their disadvantages – a Chinese swimmer, double-leg amputee, and with only one arm, winning the backstroke, for example. But let’s hope the Games don’t head the same way as the Olympics, where the guy with the most money or least scruples can win – in some respects, it’s already happened!” See the complete article at “The Science of Sport
