Acupuncture for Your Child Athlete!
Acupuncture for kids is a viable option for today’s active youth. In effort to maintain optimal health and resilience, acupuncture serves to restore balance and maintain the integrity of the body’s structure and function. With the child athlete, acupuncture can reduce the pain and inflammation associated with joint sprains and muscle strains. Furthermore, acupuncture reduces swelling, bruising and muscle spasms.
Whether your child has experienced an acute injury or is running hard on the track, muscles and joints are being pushed to their functional capacity. Repetitive motion patterns predispose the muscles and joints to imbalance. Treatments increase healing time by stimulating blood flow to affected areas. Acupuncture provides for the reduction of lingering inflammation which lends itself to re-gaining full range of motion after injury. However, one must not be in pain or have had an injury to receive acupuncture.
Treatments provide for optimal wellness by re-calibrating the structural and neurological systems of the body. In the elite athlete, acupuncture has become a mainstay for physical rehabilitation. For those who wish to reach their functional peak and maintain a high level of performance, regular acupuncture sessions are essential.
In a study conducted by Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard University, it was concluded that pain experienced in children decreased in those who received acupuncture. The year long study treated kids for headaches, stomachaches, and back pain. At the start of the study kids noted their pain level at 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. At the end of the study, the pain had reduced to a 3. Consequently, kids were better able to participate in extra curricular activities, sleep had improved and school was better attended. Although each patient responds to acupuncture differently, it can enhance the overall performance of the child athlete.
Of course there is some trepidation with kids receiving acupuncture treatment. However, many kids get excited about going to see the acupuncturist. Generally, adults have more fear of acupuncture needling. When explained to kids that an acupuncture session won’t cause harm, they are prepared to experience the fine, hair like needles. Acupuncture is relaxing and restorative. Moreover, for kids to receive acupuncture gives them something “cool” to tell their friends about at school.
