Cutting Edge Injury Treatment and Prevention Aids

Cutting Edge Injury Treatment and Prevention Aids

I often get questions about what a parent can do to help their youth athlete stay healthy and injury free. A book could be written on the subject but, for today and in the days to come I will review my favorite  cutting edge injury prevention and treatment aids. Some are at home remedies and treatments some you will have to seek out a professional to assist in the process .Many of these aids are somewhat unique and in some cases you may have never heard about until now . Here are two to get you started today!

This is one of my favorites.Although you may need a professional at first you can easily learn basic application from a professional who knows about K-Tape and you will be able to help your youth athlete in a very unique way. I have uses this on Lauren numerous times and had great success in decreasing pain and correcting muscle imbalance when needed.

*Kinesio Taping

Kinesio Taping enhances the body’s own capability to heal,” says Vincent DeBono, D.C., dean of clinics at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard. Your doctor applies the tape in specific patterns around the joint in order to activate some muscles and inhibit others to get the knee to track appropriately again, Dr. DeBono says. The material is about the thickness of skin and can be worn three to five days at a time, even withstanding long runs, swims, or showers. “With the tape we can return runners two or three weeks earlier than without it.” And in four to six weeks you can be running without any tape at all, DeBono says.

Kinesio Taping alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. The taped portion forms convolutions in the skin, thus increasing interstitial space. The result is that pressure and irritation are taken off the neural and sensory receptors, alleviating pain. Pressure is gradually taken off the lymphatic system, allowing it to channel more freely. For more information visit http://www.kinesiotaping.com/

*Foam Rollers

The iliotibial band (the band of connective tissue that spands from the hip down to the lateral side of our knee) can be a tough thing to stretch. But tightness is often what’s causing your pain, so it’s crucial to stretch the band before and after a workout. Taylor-Haas recommends lying on a foam roller, perpendicular to the floor and slowly rolling from hip to knee. “Using a foam roller helps break up adhesions between soft tissue underlying the I.T. band and the I.T. band itself, which can relieve your pain.”

Foam rolling, to be technical, is a form of self myofascial release (SMR). SMR allows the muscle to relax and this in turn can help rid the areas of the unwanted scaring, knots, and ugly adhesions. Muscles need to be strong and supple at the same time through an entire range of motion. Foam rolling helps the body achieve this. Just as I believe that stretching is essential for good overall muscle health, foam rolling is in the same category. While stretching elongates the muscle tissue, foam rolling helps to ensure proper muscle quality. You can use the roller on hamstrings, low back muscles everywhere you need a stretch and muscle release.Your child can learn to do it on herself too!
