Is Water Really All That Cool??

January 11, 2008

Water in all sports is the life blood of competition. Your body performs better in a hydrated state and ultimately races can be won or loss due to poor hydration of an athlete. But is water “Hip”???  Well , according to my daughter Lauren  it is very hip.

We were shopping the other day at Wholefoods Market and she rushes over to the water  isle and begins to check out all the different “flavored water varieties”. I tell myself it’s better than rushing to the candy section, so I guess I have to pay a bit more for a little after school pleasure.I tell her she can chose 2 flavors, with no added sugar or fake poisonous sugar.

She agrees and begins the tasks of choosing the just right bottle of H2o. Several minutes later she chooses 2 bottles  16oz each. One with a kiwi strawberry  fruit essence 1.67 and  the other a mint lemon essence 1.67 too.Well the “Healthy” pleasure cost me $3.34 ,but I am glad she can make choices that will help her perform better, be healthier and keep my dental bills down. (her mouth has cost a small fortune but the beautiful smile is truly priceless)

I guess Water is Hip and that is why we pay the price of more than a gallon of gas for the simple opportunity to drink from a plastic bottle that may cause us some form of poisoning .I am a very balanced person, I try to do more green, eat more raw and fresh veggies, recycle and look for paraben free skin and hair products when I can. It’s so hard to keep up with all the “correct  useable products and food stuffs but I try.

Well, after the 3.34 water trip, I got to thinking about water  and even more the water bottles we drink from. Just a mere year ago it was okay to drink from plastic that was Nalgene. We were told that they didn’t leach the problem chemicals the basic plastic bottles did. Well it’s a New Year and now the former Nalgene safe isn’t so safe any longer.

What’s a mom to do? Well this mom remembers glass sparkletts and coke bottles. I guess in the future we will be going back to the future with these old fashion New Age containers .

That might not be such a bad idea. At all the track meets I have been to there are way to many messy thoughtless people who leave their plastic gatorade and water bottles for the host team to clean up after them. As for the track meets and all those water bottles all over the place, we can certainly encourage our towns and leagues to make recycling a priority. http://www.playsportstv.com/feature.php?id=137

But there’s actually a much better solution, one that will make a significant impact on our environment, locally and globally: reduce the amount of bottled water and bottled sports drinks our kids consume. You say how do we do that at a competiton ?

Well bring water stored in  very cool looking  glass or stainless steel or aluminum container. There are many companies that are selling these environmentally safe and sane products now. Don’t be left behind ,not to mention who knows how we would be helping the long term health of our kids removing all those unhealthful chemicals our plastic bottles are leching into our “pure” hydration source.

In the long run these bottles and ones like them are cheaper for our pockets and better for our environment than those old plastic water bottles. Think about it..Better yet, I hope to see you at a track meet this spring and summer with a “Cool and Hip”water bottle.
