Lauren’s 100Meter National AAU JO Championship
As we begin this 2008 track season,I wanted to take a look back at my favorite race of Lauren’s track season. The 2007 AAU National Junior Olympics. It was so exciting to watch not only her performance but all the athletes in the finals. When she crossed the finish line I saw joy and pride all over her face. I could not help but be proud and excited for her.
This was her first complete season year of competing , and her first National Championship 100 meter Title with a time of 14.39(Primary Girls 99′) her 2nd best time ever. This same day she also became the runner up in the 200meter and 4th place finisher in the Long Jump.
Truly all athletes were winners that day. There were amazing performances by children like new friend of Lauren’s named Daesha Rodgers (same age group) Gold medalist 200,400 and 800 M . I could only watch in amazement the gift in action. We some times don’t remember that what our athletes display is a GIFT you can’t just say your going to run fast and do it. These talented athletes make it look like that through.
Well it’s over now, that was last season. Now we will build on what she has developed and move forward. We start over….AGAIN She like many have begun conditioning and base training. She likes most of the training but at times I really have to remind her of the goal as she would rather watch “Sponge Bob” than run a set of breakdowns and drills.
As the season begins we as parents have high hopes and dreams for our young athletes. The question I ask Lauren is , what are your dreams? Hopes and desires? How will you make them come true? What can I do to help you achieve them?
We always want track to be fun.The reality is that although it is fun…… It’s all the time a lot of work .I believe focusing Lauren and redefining goals and expectations yearly, is an important part of the ongoing track experience for her. As your child begins his season share your enthusiasm and ask him what are his goals? Is track still fun to him? These 2 questions can be the start of an on going dialog of what your child is feeling and thinking about his participation in the sport.
This year is special with the Olympic trials then the Olympics in late summer. The world will be watching my favorite sport once again ,and Americans will if just for a moment pretend and even feel like Track and Field is their favorite too!
We will see some youth track teams grow a bit larger, maybe the crowds at the weekly meets get a bit larger too! It’s all good. With the new season brings new promise and excitment for our children and the “Elite Athlete” that represent us to the world.Personally I can’t wait… Take a look …….
